I’m an abstract expressionist currently living and working in Calgary, Alberta. My Liquid Landscapes collection is full of colour and movement. They are created by mixing acrylic paint with a pouring medium. I forego the traditional techniques of painting with brushes and use gravity as my tool to create my paintings. The fluid, acrylic paint mixtures are poured directly onto the canvas, which is then manipulated by moving the canvas around, tilting up and down, forward and backward, allowing the colors to take their own course and blend together creating a marbling effect.
Dream Series, part of my Liquid Landscapes collection, is inspired by my personal recollection of dreams, documented over a number of months and realized through my abstract expressionist style. My paintings are created intuitively. I am on a journey, trusting my unique creative process by using my inner guidance. My intention is to use the act of painting to connect with my subconscious and explore the journey into the invisible worlds of soul and spirit. When I create intuitive paintings I focus on allowing the paint to lead me, willing to face the unknown and to learn to trust my intuition even if I don’t know where it is taking me.
Inspired to create art at an early age, Vanessa excelled in art studies throughout her 12 years of public school. After graduating from Medicine Hat High School in 1996, she attended the Visual Communications program at Medicine Hat College in Medicine Hat, Alberta. She continued to apply her artistic skills in painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, illustration, lithography, art history, graphic design and website design classes. In 2005, she enrolled in the Architectural Technologies program at SAIT in Calgary, Alberta where she graduated with honors in 2007.
After working full-time over the next three years at a Calgary Architecture Firm, in early 2010, Vanessa felt an overwhelming creative urge and desire to express herself. She started painting again and her passion for abstract expressionism began to emerge. Since 2010, Vanessa’s artwork has been exhibited in numerous group and solo shows across Alberta and has been sold to private collectors across North America. She has also donated works to various charity events and fundraisers in Calgary, Alberta, including the Art Gallery of Calgary’s Annual fundraising Art Auction “Masterpiece Contemporary” in March of 2013.
